Heavy rainfall fell yesterday and caused extensive damage in several areas of the country. Floods were reported in the cities of Pyrgos, Kyparissia and Filiatra in the Peloponese, as well as in the prefectures of Thessaloniki and Chalkidiki in northern Greece.
A further deterioration of the weather is expected today that will affect Attica as well.
The first priority for the new European Commission should be managing migration, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Wednesday at an event on youth participation in European politics in Croatia.
“Greece has reached its limits. We need a common system on asylum that will replace Dublin,” he said, adding that the sharing of the burden should not be just an empty slogan without any substance.
Mitsotakis said that Greece receives an average of 500 asylum seekers a day, the situation on the Greek islands is now “unmanageable,” and the transfer of refugees to the mainland is causing reactions by the local population.
In the meantime, 346 persons have reached our country in the last 24 hours.
Diagoras ship reached the port of Piraeus this morning carrying 34 migrants and refugees from the islands of Lesvos and Chios. Another ship carrying 22 refugees from the islands of Kos and Rhodes is expected within the day. Migrants and refugees will be transferred to reception centers in the mainland.
The Greek prime minister will meet shortly with his Croatian counterpart Andrej Plenkovic. At 11 am, Mitsotakis will participate in a panel discussion on the European Peoples Party’s initiatives to tackle climate change.
Greece’s 2020 draft budget plan is «compatible» with the Stability and Growth Pact, the European Commission said in a report presenting its opinion on the draft budgetary plans of all Eurozone member-states.
The EU’s executive body also adopted the fourth Enhanced Surveillance Report on Greece in the framework of the post-program monitoring of the country. The conclusions of the Commission’s report will be discussed at the December 4 Eurogroup meeting.
The draft budget for the year 2020 will tabled in Parliament today.
