World leaders seeking an enduring ceasefire in Libya have agreed at a summit to impose sanctions on those breaking an arms embargo and are considering whether to send a multinational force to the country.
The conference in Berlin of 11 countries was aimed at bringing an end to the fighting between the UN-recognised government in Tripoli led by the prime minister, Fayez al-Sarraj, and the Libyan National Army led by commander Khalifa Haftar.
While both sides to the conflict have agreed to nominate five members to an UN ceasefire monitoring committee, they are still far apart and not yet willing to negotiate directly.
Turkey has become one of the key actors in the Berlin process for peace in Libya, the country’s presidential spokesman said on Monday, thanks to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s “effective and multidimensional diplomacy.”
«Berlin Summit is an important opportunity for the cessation of conflicts and a political solution in Libya,» Ibrahim Kalin said on Twitter.
He also stressed that Turkey will maintain its «constructive and peaceful policy» against the proxy wars.
The head of Libya’s UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA), Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj, and Khalifa Haftar, the commander of the self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA), were both in Berlin but refused to sit or meet with each other as tensions remained between the two parties.
Greece did not officially take a position on the results of the Berlin conference, but ‘government sources’ talking to media off-the-record emphasized the positives.
Greece will officially make its position known after Monday’s European Foreign Affairs Council, which Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias will attend and where «a complete briefing on the conference’s results» will be made.
Finance Minister Christos Staikouras is in Brussels today to attend the Eurogroup and Ecofin meetings scheduled for today and tomorrow respectively.
The government «condemns in the strongest possible terms the fascist attack on DeutscheWelle journalist Thomas Jacobi at Syntagma Square,» government spokesman Stelios Petsas said on Sunday.
Jacobi was attacked by unknown persons while covering a rally on migration and refugees on Sunday.
Dozens of Iraqi protesters were wounded in Baghdad and other cities on Monday in clashes with security forces who were trying to clear blocked roads.
